Vatican City - Saturday 15th October

Today we walked to Vatican city, the smallest independent country in the world and also the home of the Pope, the head of the catholic church. We decided to go on a guided tour to avoid the long queue to get inside. Each day Vatican city gets 10,000 visitors a day, which is a huge amount!!

Outside the main street to Vatican City...

After we got inside, the guide gave us a brief introduction about Vatican city. We learnt that it became an independent country in 1929, it has 800 residents and is the home to the 5th largest museum in the world. The museum was amazing, it had lots of paintings, sculptures and tapestry. It was also very crowded because there were lots of other tour groups and visitors. In one of the rooms, the paintings on the ceiling looked 3D because they were shaded to look like they were. There was also a tapestry of Jesus in another room, who's eyes and feet followed you as you walked past it.

The art work was amazing in the museum...

After we got out of the squashy museum, our group made our way to the Sistine Chapel, a famous chapel who's ceiling was painted by Michealangelo. The back wall was also painted by Michealangelo, of the famous Last Judgement. The Sistine Chapel is the place where Popes are chosen. It was also packed inside here, and we were squashed up like sardines. The paintings were very beautiful and very detailed. We spent five minutes in there, then we moved on to St Peters Basilica, the largest catholic church in the world. That was huge!

We walked around the massive Basilica, admiring the detailed sculptures and all the paintings on the walls. We left Vatican City in awe.

We had pizza and pasta for lunch at a restaurant, then went back to our hotel.
In the evening, we went to the colosseum for one last walk around, then made our way to the Trevi Fountain to throw a coin in, which will hopefully guarantee our return to Rome some day.
